Good friend of FGY, Perki from Deaf Pigeon posted this idea on there today, prior to a jaunt to Bristol where he'll be meeting up with a mate with similar pouch tendencies.
I thought it was a neat little idea as I'm a dyed in the wool 'minimal-oholic'. But having said that I can't stand being stuck without those things that nine times out of ten you don't use, with a little bit of luck...What's in yours...Email above!!!

Sometimes I think people lose sight of what's important in life. Too often we read about this frame these wheels etc etc. Which is all well and good, we all love to ride a bike that's as individual as we all are. But that's my point 'Riding the bike', no matter what the bike is has to be the most important factor in what we do. This mornings ride to work brought that into clear focus for me. On the deserted cycle track, frozen snow crackling beneath my tyres, -5˚ making its way into the very depths my lungs. As the sun breaks the horizon I remember why cycling is so important to us, it releases us from the hum-drum, it sets the world to rights, sets us free. All for the meager price of a bit of effort and a few calories! Sorry about the shitty iPhone photo, the best camera is the one you've got with you they say. Right now, I'm smiling a smile that should see me through a day of toil, to the reverse ride home again, this time in the dark! Bring it on! Ride safe people...Nick.

The amazing news has broken that SSUK'12 is going to be held in Gods own country this year. Everybody knows that single speed mountain biking is really stupid, that's what makes it so good! So it seems perfect that this years event is being man-handled by the guys at 'CHEEKYTRAILS', don't expect much sobriety or athletic prowess, but do expect some bike based hilarity with tents. Watch the 'CHEEKYTRAILS' or SSUK 2012 sites for up dates and info about a rumored warm up event in the near future! Vintage Bike Cave...

If you're signed up to the Facebook group you'll probably be more than aware that I'm building up a vintage Daccordi at the moment. It's a labour of love for sure and sourcing appropriate bits is a nightmare at the best of times. I've emailed companies and individuals and they've not replied and just don't get me started about eBay!!!

One major exception to all this disappointment came in the shape of VINTAGEBIKECAVE. Based in Highgate, London and run by Graham and Jake, I first came across them on eBay where they have been trading for about 3 years. I emailed them describing exactly what I was looking for in a set of forks for the Daccordi and despite being mad busy getting their brand new website together, emailed me back exactly what I'd asked for. I knew it was exactly, they'd even included a set of very clear photos and a very reasonable price! Though still under construction, their online store and blog are well worth a visit and if you can't see what you're after, do what I did, drop Jake a line and they'll look through a mountain of Vintage stuff for you! I've popped a link to them on the side bar and if you get over there this weekend, 2nd-4th December, they're offering 20% off everything on the site and judging by the photo above, you'll probably not be disappointed!

Been pondering "Utility bikes" of late and came across these during my internet based ponderings.
Firstly french photographer Alain Delorms "Totems" series is mental, some serious work horses in Shanghai! Just be sure to ignore his other set of photographs that verge on Paedo' fodder!!! Nextly there was this, A design contest to design the ultimate smugness flotilla, Some famous builders involved, some raging Hipsters too, there's even a "Do a skid" moment in there somewhere. My personal favourite flotilla is the one that stands up in the corner of the garage! I don't need one, but if I had the cash I'd sure as hell have me one!!!

Hello people, back in the saddle at last! Sorry for the break in communications, as people probably picked up on, I've been on a doctor advised cycling hiatus, but was back on it last night.
It was a great ride out with Isao, Matt, Adam, Brad, Mark, Ricky and Caddy all fixed and myself and Johhny, now to be known as Team Spam, on the SS-MTBs. We got to see Rickys new ride, very tasty!!! Me and Johnny managed a short detour along some field side tracks, which meant we missed Brad and caddys little accident, caused by Brads dropped tenner emergency stop, he's a yorkshireman!!! As you can see we also got our Ale trail cards for this year! WOOP WOOP!!! Miles and miles of beer and smiles!!!

Really sad news again. The theiving scum struck again lastnight in Strensall just outside the home of good friend and FGY regular Johnny Rose. He's had his beloved Giant Track (pictured) and His brand new Giant Bowry 72 taken.

And to add insult to injury they trashed the back door of his work van to do so. So please keep your eyes peeled the bowry is easily recognised as it has a Boikzmoind sticker covering a dent on the side of the seat tube and the Track isn't that common. If you see or hear anything please let us know via the FGY email or FB. If you see either and can do so safely, lock it up and call the police. Thanks all Nick

Well I decided to create something for the lads, raise a little bit of money for the FGY bank and pay homage to the new local! This lino print is available in two different colour editions, printed by myself and numbered and signed. Each edition is limited to only 5 prints so snap them up while you can for a reasonable price of £15. Half of each print sale goes to the FGY bank account (i.e. Nick) for anything FGY related. Just drop me an email if your out of York and I'm sure we can sort something out! Also if you give me advanced warning and live in York I can go on one big delivery spree/ take them with me on a ride. After a successful debut outing with the FGY team and much roller encouragement. Steve "Brad" Bradley has agreed that the beer garden of his fine Ale house, FGY Office and spiritual home, The Fulford Arms should be the meeting point for our weekly fixed outings!

So 6:30 in the beer garden from now on!!! Myself and Mark will pass by the fountain for the next few weeks to pick up anybody there till word gets round!!!

A bit slow off the mark this week, but on wednesday an awesome little jaunt to the Duke of York in Gate Helmsley was had in the company of Johnnie, Mark, Isao, Adam and new rider chris aka Maximus Quackhandle (love the Brasseye link, just lay off the cake man!). We had an after beer skidathon in the carpark and bombed the sunny hills. I'm sure you all remember the recent theft of Isao's Mash, which sadly never resurfaced.
But his new ride is pretty to say the least, with a lovley red and gold flake scheme going on.

Had a bloody puncture!!! The up side is, I got to give the new spanner/ tyre leve/ beer opener from Portland design works a bit of a work out. It's small, light, coated so it doesn't knacker your rims and it pops the lid off of your alchohol based bike fuel. A nice bit of design!!!...

I had planned to go for a ride this arvo, but it didn't work out that way. So to kill an hour I knocked up this little beauty from recycled bits of black 1000 denier bag material, which is on t'other side so you cant see it, and the edging tape from same bag. The insides are some spray painted up canvas offcuts from an earlier project. A bit ruff and ready, but who gives a fuck when you've saved the £30 you'd have to splurge to buy one with a fancy logo on it...

Well, I posted about these back in June when they were fresh out of the box, I was impressed. Having ridden them through one of the worst winters I can remember, all I can say is get some bought...Now you also have the option to go for the new Pro version with the added SPD cleat-ability, I love my Spuds so I really want some of these, but I fear I'm no going to be able ruin the ones I have any time soon!!!

...A bit of night riding was carried out on wednesday by the FGY hardcore...Myself, Mark, Johnnie & Ben rode a seriously cold 33miles of lanes under the full moon...I got to try out the joystick, my Xmas present to my self and pretty awesome it is!...The other guys didn't want to ride behind me due to worries about retinal damage from the Red-eye rear light...the only down point of a great ride was the Bonk that I hit!...note to self, must get fit again and buy some energy gels...the crisps, nuts and black sheep in the pub sorted out the situation though...Same, time same place next week if you fancy some milage!!!...Nick

Danger of black ice indeed! it was good to get on the bike again after a break of too long due to snow, ice and illness. The company was good too in the form of Mark Ivkovic and Ryan "Calamity" Manders...and there lies the sting in the tail of what turned into a eventfull ride. We had some nice pop at the Guy Fawkes to warm up after the first session, then headed out for an other freezing! Mark sailed across the patch of black ice, I fish tailed, but managed to regain my composure, ryan on the otherhand took the full somersault option (What else would you expect from old calamity)! Luckily I had the first aid kit in the shape of a flask of tea and a flask of single malt! then we rode gingerly home! Ryan's off back to Cov' now, so next week it's home riders only!!! Started to feel the first bite of autumn during a very enjoyable ride tonight, with Mark, Johnnie and new rider Isao, who has recently moved to York from Japan to do a postgrad' year at the Uni. Welcome aboard man, many rides to come! He's only gone and brought his Cinelli Mash with him and it's a beauty!! We took him for his first english beer in a pub, so went for the Black swan which is the oldest in York!!

Johnny brought out his newest spoke cards and bobby dazzlers they were too! Should have said "Caution Johnnie" though.
It was hilarious when they came flying out due to the huge amount of acceleration he can wrestle from his plug!!!...

Well after a few mishaps and me generally being rubbish the alleycat video is finally up! The Day was a real good laugh, nothing too serious with lots of smiles. Well it was Matts last ride for a while, as he is heading to B-town on sea to be a smelly student! There was a really good show totaling "Eight", including Ron, whos fingers are pictured above, but more about that shortly. Hope it all goes really well Matt, and see you at the christmas cracker, don't forget your santa hat!

So the ride was a nice stretch out to gate Helmsley via Stockton on Forest. We encountered the mother of all puddles, well totally flooded road really...it smelled a bit suspect :0/ ...After a swift one in the Duke of York, we headed back as the light faded...That's when Me and Ron took bit of a swerve and front his wheel took a close look at my pedal! I took a swift detour onto the grass verge and some how stayed on two wheels, but as you can see Ron took the full somersault jobby, narrowly missed by Mark and Matt who were close behind...After a short blood mopping and bike fettling break he soldiered the rest of the way home with us. Hope you heal quick mate, see you next week!!!

The weather forecast was good and for once they got it pretty much right. Ryan, Mark, Johnny and myself were joined by Leigh, visiting rider from Rhode Island coming via a three year stay in The Toon, And newly moved to York Michael and his girlfriend (I'm really shitty at remembering more than one name at a time, so sorry you can give me a good slap ath the next ride!). Mellow miles were rolled, beer and laughs were had, some nice new metalwear to ogle to boot...

I've been thinking latley that I could do with slimming down the old tool kit and carrying a slightly smaller and less sweaty backpack. but then I'd have major dilemma.

How do I carry home the four pack of ale or kebab I bought on the way home from the weekly ride? After hours trawling of the blogs, I'd seen the rather excellent Spinwell Musette, now "sold out", and thought, a nice idea well executed which would slip in yer pocket/ fanny pack (for the hipsters).
This is the limited edition individually numbered, fixed gear York Musette, made by my own hands, only a prototype at present, I'm just working out the final sizing (will fit 4cans/ kebab), fastening, adornment (each on will be individual) and pricing issues. Matt, thanks again for the use of the marvelous spoke card design seen here, you can have number 2 of 25!!! Shout me up on the FGY facebook with feedback or if you want one people, there will be spoke cards and maybe stickers included in the price, which I'm thinking will be around £15 inc postage...All the best...ride hard...ride safe...Nick...

Ride 21st July - Ale Trail route #3

Hello, first up an apology for the lack of posts of late, busy & all that. Well last weeks ride was nearly a washout due to holidays, work and torrential rain, thunder and lightning. Jonny and me still managed 5 pubs, but I forgot my camera and to be honest I wouldn't have got it out in that weather, very wet arse!
This weeks ala trail was the marathon of the series, taking in three country pubs spread over a route of about 30 miles, including some paris-Roubaix style cycle track, where ironically we bumped into or French buddy Cedric, going in completely the wrong direction. We had a new Face, Mr Caddy with us, welcome aboard. As you can see from the photos the sun didn't last and the rain rolled in, It didn't dampen our spirits and we rode on, with all the usual sprint/ skid/ trackstand & trick action.
A big thumbs up has to go out to MJ, who did the ride with a mild case of Pneumonia!!! Also thanks to him for donating the design for the new spoke cards that will be all over the place soon! No ride for me next week, holiday time, see you soon Nick.

Ross has kindly added me as a blog contributor,
So I thought I'd kick of my input with last nights Prologue to the bigger rides to come...

When I got a message from Johhny the other day about this, it was too good an idea to let pass by.
The ale trail consists of 24 Real ale pubs in and around York. Buy a half or pint of finest ale/ cider, get sticker for your collectors card, more stickers more rewards, such as free beer etc, simple!
So a few of us, including new face Cedric, on his tidy red and white bowry, met up at the fountain and headed out to The Marcia in Bishopthorp, The Fox and Roman on Taddy road, The Slip Inn by the river and The Last Drop Inn on Kings Square. Beer was drunk, any gradient was bombed as fast as possible and a good time was had by all. We even managed to Teach Adam about the joys of real beer. The next ride promises to be a longer affair so bring water, tools and beer money and join the fun. cheers Nick.

Ride 28th June - Castle Howard BBQ Leaving Ride

Unfortunately my time in York is coming to an end, I fully intend to make my way back up the M1 on a regular basis, after all, the riding and the mates are too good to miss!

Matt and Nick organised a Castle Howard bbq Ride in my honour. So we loaded up the bags and set out at around 7 into the country. After being in denial about the fact it was raining, I was soon forced to accept that Yorkshire was going to do it in style! Not being fair weather cyclists we ploughed on, picking up newcomer Johnny on the way. After climbing bulmer bank in the rain, with five tinnies and a lump of cow on my back i was glad when we found a nice spot at Castle Howard under some trees to bqq. Matt was grillmeister and I was introduced to this pepper sauce which was amazing! Apart from the encounter with the pick-up truck, the bbq was a great sucess and about 9 we put on our lights, packed up our rubbish and headed home.

Apart from a pinch flat and the intensity of descending terrington bank in torrential rain, the ride back was great. We rolled together as a group all the way back to York with smiles on our faces.

Just recieved an email from Jon over at Cycle Street in Heworth which openned a couple of months back.

"We sell Cannondale, GT, Charge, Dawes and Barrosa. We’ve already done a fair few fixed / single speed conversions and stock a good selection of sprocketry etc to suit most perversions."

They will offer you a 10% discount if you mention Fixed Gear York. I used to live in Heworth last year, but I am yet to make the short trip. May well be worth a look and their website looks like it will be really good! Its great to see more York bike shops catering for the fixed/singlespeed marke.

What with everyone in the throws of exams and some day trips there was a small turnout, so we decided to make the most of the summery evening and have a nice ride out of the City. Avoiding the temptation of the pubs in Bishopthorpe we looped round to the Ship Inn in Accaster, and had a nice cold one in the beer garden, was a real nice pub! Then a quick blast back to town and home for tea!

From the second you open the box you know you’re dealing with a shoe that may look like a Chuck Taylor low top, that really is where the similarity ends. The sole is stiffened and feels pretty much like an SPD sole, stiff but enough flex to wear on and off the bike and be comfy. The 1000 denier cordura material is lined with what feels like memory foam, comfy.

The build quality is immaculate, and the design features, such as the elastic lace trap, reflective dot on the heel and stitched in tongue, reminiscent of a walking boot, the stickers and even the box all ooze quality.

I’ve wrecked Vans, Cons, Nike, Specialized, Merrel, addidas etc etc; and will honestly say that these, although they did seem a little expensive, are gonna take some beating. They feel like they’ll take some breaking in. But once there will serve me well and look well cool for a long time to come, only time will tell.
